HUSH were appointed for this major refurbishment of a Grade II listed building to provide bar and event space in what was the well-known Audley Public House. The work consisted of major renovations to the elevations of brick and terracotta, dating back over 100 years. Replacement terracotta blocks were supplied by Darwen, many of which had to be hand finished due to their intricate detailing. A complete new roof structure was provided with replacement tiling of Welsh slate. The corner turret had to be rebuilt to make way for two new dormer windows with terracotta surrounds. Internally the building was stripped of all surfaces and, with the listed building consent, any non-original partitions and features were removed, floors were strengthened and a lot of decayed structural timber replaced to ensure the building’s future use as event space. Many challenges presented themselves as the building was stripped out, requiring unforeseen repairs which challenged the budget and programme, coupled with the project being carried out almost entirely in the Covid pandemic. |
