The Hickman – the first building in the world to achieve WireScore’s SmartScore ‘Platinum’ award

As project managers for the redevelopment of The Hickman in Whitechapel, we are delighted that the hard work that went into this exciting project has resulted in such a prestigious award.

WiredScore launched SmartScore, its certification for smart buildings, in April 2021. SmartScore is a global standard of best-in-class smart buildings that deliver an exceptional experience for users, are cost-efficient while meeting high sustainability standards, and are fully future proof.

The Hickman is the first building in the world to be awarded the SmartScore ‘Platinum’ rating demonstrating cutting edge innovation, the use of cutting-edge innovation by using market leading technology to deliver world class outcomes for users and the buildings sustainability and future proofing.

The Hickman offers its own award-winning smart workplace app – sesame™ allowing users to book desks before they come to the office, check air quality and check travel updates. On the journey into work the app allows them access to over 150 magazine and news titles and once they arrive, they have handsfree access to the building and pick up a preordered coffee from the reception area.

At their desk users can adjust lighting and temperature to improve their working environment and enhance productivity or utilise the concierge service to connect with local shops, gyms and entertainment venues.

As a tech-enabled building, The Hickman offers occupiers control of building services allowing them detailed real-time energy analysis and occupancy data allowing them to optimise their office space.

Tom McClellan, Country Director UK & Ireland, WiredScore, said, ‘In achieving the first SmartScore Platinum rating globally, the highest possible rating for the SmartScore certification, Great Portland Estates has demonstrated its commitment a more sustainable, digitally sound future, with technology at its heart.’

Tracy Marsh, Managing Director Hush PM&C, added, ‘We have always advocated using smart technology in our new builds and fit-out projects. The exit from this pandemic just highlights the immediacy of the necessities of these requirements. With the changes to building utilisation, these technologies are increasingly important to promote safe working and cost savings for the buildings of the future, staff’s well-being and companies’ efficiency.’
